Visual Studies Workshop (2020)

In January of 2020, I was an artist in residence at Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY. It’s a research based residency where I examined images of space, focusing on images of space before humans had left the earth’s realm. I have used some of the imagery in both Anthro-site and in the Moon Wobble experiment in Het Domijn. I also developed ideas for personal video viewers, small self-contained vessels where one can view small moving images.

VSW also had a room full of magic lantern slides, early primarily photographic images mounted on glass slides. They were largely educational in purpose, often with a Western colonial filter reflecting the era they were created in. I focused on the few images related to space, often layering them with images of the Netherlands and Slovakia.
