Hello/Goodbye (2012)

Installed on site at At Home Gallery and Contemporary Art Centre, Šamorín, Slovakia - March-April, 2012

I think of my artwork as a tool or machine to perform some metaphorical task (often an attempt to fix something that can’t be fixed). The task of this piece was to say goodbye to my father (Marty, Patty, Cousin Mary, Hilda, now Karl…) even as he was dying/before he died. It is my objection to the voids that are so permanently large a person/body leaves behind.

It is a one-way conversation of longing. It is about the gesture of reaching across the physical and metaphorical/symbolic spaces between people/bodies/us. It is one gesture among hundreds thousands and more. (It’s not just mine)

We come together, we move apart, repeat.
